Muhammad ALI

From Rome to Atlanta…
The path of a fighter
MUHAMMAD ALI USA BOXING 1942-2016

Rome 1960, and an 18-year-old boxer named Cassius Clay won the light heavyweight title. But Olympic gold could not open every door. After returning to his country, he was forbidden entry to a restaurant reserved for whites. Legend has it that, in a fit of anger, he threw his medal in the Ohio River. Clay was an Olympic champion, but first and foremost black.

After becoming world champion, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. In 1966, he refused to go and fight in the Vietnam War. Although he avoided prison, he was stripped of his title and banned from boxing. Ali lost three years of his career at the peak of his powers for the sake of his beliefs.

Like Jack Johnson, he overturned standards and influenced a whole generation. In 1996 in Atlanta, he was the final torchbearer. Through his presence, the Games paid tribute to a lifetime of combat
